I Love You Because

I haven’t been talking about this enough on here… partly because there is just so much else going on.   But I really have been remiss.  So here goes:

I Love You Because is a "modern day musical love story" based ever so loosely on Pride and Prejudice.  It’s funny, it’s sweet, it’s silly, it’s a great time!  And if you don’t believe me… well… you’re lame.  The show plays April 4 & 5 @ 8:00 and April 6 @ 3:00.  It has also just been held over, so we will be doing two additional performances April 10 & 11 @ 8:00.  Woohoo!  $10 for a musical people!

DG Associate Artist Michele is directing this ragtag crew of singers - featuring Warehouse Journeymen Jenn and David (who, by the way, will be playing in this weekend’s late night improv shows, March 28 & 29 @ 10:30), The Globe’s Jen (me), and our good pals Harry, Charlie and Leslie.  And our father-daughter musician team of Jim and Caroline is in tip-top shape!  Ya know, rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, I’ll give you a little piece of the press release… and then some rehearsal photos… and if you keep checking back, you might get even more exciting previews.  Wouldn’t that be rewarding?   Anyway:

Boy meets girl.  Boy loves girl.  Girl loves boy.  Boy and girl get married, have 2.5 kids and live happily ever after in the suburbs.
If only it were that easy.
I Love You Because is a modern musical meandering through the reality of modern metropolitan romance, with all of its twists, turns and neuroses.  Meet Marcy and Austin – “they couldn’t be less perfect for each other” – on the rebound and on the defensive.  Meet Diana and Jeff – “We’re just friends… who also make out.” – just out for a good time.  Meet the bartenders – “we’re basically therapists who encourage you to drink.” – the all-knowing chorus who help guide our fed-up lovers through all-too-familiar relationship pitfalls.  Funny and sweet and witty, you’ll love I Love You Because… because we’ve all been there.

Doesn’t that sound like something you want to see?  And doesn’t it look like something you want to see?

And, on a personal note, I’ll be going on a cruise starting today… so the blog may slow down for a couple days.  But have no fear!  There will be much to post about once I return!

Just Plain Busy

Okay… it has been bonkers here at The Distracted Globe.  Sunday was our final improv workshop.  And, while I know I still haven’t posted week seven photos, I will beg your patience in week 8 photos as well.  But I will give you a little taste of the mayhem:

  • "I’m going to a lace party!"
  • "You could get 13 spider rings!"
  • "Wait, are you picking my pocket?"  "Finders keepers!"
  • "There was a memo, the casserole was bad."
  • "A bowtie, a bra and a ham sandwich in a library."
  • "That’s like a triple negative.  I’m not even sure what that means… it must be my condition… that I don’t have."
  • "The chicken is really good, but even though they’re a chicken shack, I go because the shack is really great."
  • On the trip from Mars - "Hot… Fast."
  • "My stripper name is marshmallow."
  • "Letting people do things that maybe you don’t want to do is an important step in a relationship."
  • "That’s a huge step in mending a fraternal type relationship."
  • "It’d be kinda like the Partridge Family, which would be weird because you’re Asian."
  • We met the sorority sisters of Fi Data Camma Felta Melta
  • "Helga like to nuzzle."
  • "Sorority Sisters - buy one, get 20 free."
  • "Nothing taks the seasoning off of ham like… a… straight razor.  Yeah."

Friday and Saturday night we had some wonderful improv shows with greetings and farewells… and we’ll have some videos posted of those on YouTube soon (though you should go look at our existing videos too… relive the thrilling past).

And… Monday night we had our auditions/summer season kickoff party.  It was a rolicking good time and a great success.  We now have the excellent dilemma of choosing from all of the amazingly talented people who came to audition!  THANK YOU TO EVERYONE for coming, chatting, eating, drinking, celebrating, etc!  It was a great time!

For whatever reason, we don’t have any Jared party pictures… but he says thank you too!

Distracted Love

This weekend has been full of love for and from The Distracted Globe.  And I just have to share that with The Distracted Blog.  We had shows Friday and Saturday night after The Warehouse Theatre’s Sight Unseen (go see it, it’s great!).  And in those shows, we had two snoggers, fresh from our improv workshops - Michele and Craig(e).  Mucho marvelous!

Friday night, we got a special visit from Bayleigh and Casey:

And Saturday night we said a fond farewell to our good friend Nicholas (without whom, we wouldn’t have most of the beautiful photos and videos that we have today!).  He’s off on his way to live the dream down in DisneyWorld, and we gave him quite the sendoff.

And tonight we have our final workshop in our second series of Improv workshops.  ACK!  Time just keeps passing!

Oh… hey… and take our audience survey.  You’ll be glad you did.

Distracted Youth

Well, this afternoon Jen and I had a great time working with Youth Leadership Greenville. Very impressive group — funny, brave, and savvy. We met with them at Saffron’s (always a great location), and spent some time investigating improv as a way to break the ice, think creatively, and have a good time.

I found out some new stuff today — for example, I did NOT know that Elton John was a saint (I’m thinking of converting to Catholicism now..) Also, I met my first real live metaphor, and I learned that Sting was actually an 1980’s metal band. Where was I? And was that Meryl Streep or Barney lurking in the background? Hard to tell in that light…

Thanks for having us — it was a blast!

Hey, come on out to some late-night-Good-Friday-comedy improv after Sight Unseen tonight (around 10:30. And it’s not too late to sign up for auditions Monday…or to at least come to the party.

Happy Holidays!

That is right, if ever there were an appropriate time to generically wish the world happy something it is today!  Acording to Cnn (http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1723811,00.html) today is the holiest day in over a thousand years!

Not only are Christians observing good Friday (meaning about a Billion people right there) but then we have Purim for our Jewish friends, Narouz for Iran, Pakistan, Afganistan or as CNN so creatively labeled them the “stan” countries,  Eid Milad an Nabi for Sunni Muslims, Small Holi for Hindus (+another Billion), and Magha Puja for Buddists.

That pretty much leaves us with everyone celebrating except for Christian Scientists- Sorry Tom maybe next Millineum.

With all this celebrating, i’ve got to search deep down within my iPod for inspiration- oh here we go “losing my religion” REM!  Sweet!!!!

I’m going to eat some chocolate, get hyper, do some improv and then try and find a Wii… why is it so hard to find those things?  Anyway, i guess that just proves that I am all for gluttony, living in excess, and worshiping video idols… see you tonight at the show!

Jared

I {Heart} Irony

Okay… I thought it was good yesterday when CNN posted the insightful line "Senator makes important speech on issue" under Obama while he spoke yesterday.  But then, sound snogger, DG Artistic Associate and all around cool guy Rick brought my attention to this sign, proudly displayed over a local business:

Whoever came up with the idea of an Easter special on piercings… wow.

Oh… and take our online survey please!  You might win stuff!

See you at this weekend’s shows!

Shakespeare

You know, as we prepare for our auditions next Monday, I think it’s worth taking a little time to talk about Shakespeare.  Often, people are intimidated by Shakespeare.  Well we would like to offer concrete proof that it’s child’s play!

Okay… so if a 6 year old can do it, you shouldn’t be worried about coming to audition for Shakespeare… unless of course you happen to be auditioning against her.  Then you might need to worry.

See you all Monday at our audition/par-tay!

Got Green?

Okay, sadly, it seems that Proposition 3-17 didn’t make its deadline of 1,000,000 signatures by midnight last night.  They’re down to just under 300,000 left.  Maybe they’ll still submit it and we can all hope for happy results next year.  Or not.  Whatever.  Anyway, I am currently sporting my green and planning to drink some Irish beer after rehearsal tonight.  But in the meanwhile, I wanted to share some of my favorite quotes from last night’s improv workshop.  I’ll share some photos soon.

  • "I’m not the boss around here per se, but people respect me."
  • "Those yankees are sneaky."
  • "The little ckickens that you blow up in the microwave!"
  • "Welcome to Hogs, Hogs and More Hogs!"
  • "Fluffy bacon… that could get us ahead in the business!"
  • "You could tell a lot about a woman from the Chinses she eats."
  • "I love aprons."
  • "It’s a great honor to be Jewish."
  • "Dunkin Donuts was not hiring."
  • We met a career patient named Marco Polo with a wood burning fireplace in his room.
  • Jayce said something about a trouser mouse… I’m not sure why… but I decided to immortalize it anyway, because it made me and Traysie giggle.
I hope we’ll see you at the shows this weekend, the audition/party on Monday and the online survey right now!

Random Thoughts on a Friday - Part 2

  • I have apparently written a blog post with this title before.
  • Who came up with that way to fold and package kleenex so that the next one pops right out of the box?
  • How much longer is the extended warranty on my car?
  • It’s amazing, people’s ability to create the exact same problems over and over and over and over again.
  • My nose is stuffy.
  • I love it when my kitty sleeps through the night instead of walking on my face at 4:00 in the morning.
  • I wonder if I’ll ever get my sign language dictionary back.
  • Why is the markup function in Word such a pain in my ass?
  • I’m about a week and a half away from taking my first real vacation… ever.
  • I can’t believe it’s the middle of March.
  • I’m gonna miss the improv workshops when they’re done.
  • I wish DG audience people were like Fiskateers… those women respond to surveys better than anyone on the planet!
  • Why is LOST the best show in the history of the world?
  • I wish the mobisodes would go ahead and load already.

Distracted Survey

Hello to the faithful dozen of you who read this blog.  Please leave us comments.  And please send this blog to your friends!

Sorry… I did a little pleading there.  It was unattractive.

Anyway, my main point here… audience survey.  We have decided we needed to ask you - our audience - some questions so that we can keep growing and keeping giving you guys more of what you want.  So, if you’ll take 5-8 1/2 minutes to fill out this survey, we’ll enter you in a drawing to win a prize!  "What’s that prize?" you might ask.  Well, we haven’t decided on the prize yet.  But we have decided that it will be awesome.  So, at least you’ve got that going for you.  Anyway… take a few minutes, weigh in, maybe win a prize.  We would greatly appreciate it!
