Ain’t Misbehavin’

Just a quick note to tell you, if you haven’t seen Greenville Little Theatre’s production of Ain’t Misbehavin’… GO!  You have tonight and tomorrow night, and then it’s outa here.  So get over there!  Great singing, energetic performances - these 5 are GOOD!

AND… you may have noticed that The Warehouse Theatre’s creepy production of The Turn of the Screw opens tonight and plays this weekend and the two following.  So make sure not to miss that.  Get your early Halloween spirit moving!  And hey… stick around after the 2nd and 3rd weekends… and you get to see us!  Bonus!

Oh… and by the way… lately I have been really overly amused by the good folks at Icanhascheezburger.com.  (Just wait until I give my presentation at work on Monday!)  It’s weird… but it’s frickin’ hysterical!

Warehouse Js and Terrible Rumors

I have to take a moment to draw some attention to The Warehouse Theatre blog.  We’ve been really encouraging this year’s Journeymen (who are pretty awesome so far) to take on the responsibility of populating the Warehouse blog.  They get to be the online voice of The Warehouse.

Oddly enough, however, they have been a little resistant until just recently.  And now, several of them have started adding content which is great.  What’s weird, however, is that it ends up making me sound like a blog-happy, dog-stealing task master!  Now, I will not comment on whether any of those things may or may not be true… but wow!  I certainly have made a big impression!  Maybe they’ll think twice before calling out "Commedia dell’Arte" at the next round of improv shows, eh?

Anyway, go read their blog.  These kids are pretty funny.

And come see our next round of shows - October 5, 6, 12 & 13 @ 10:30 following performances of The Turn of the ScrewOur tickets are still only $5!

Swag

I think, unless you are a pirate, that "swag" is an incredibly stupid word.  Marketers WAY over use it when they’re talking about making stuff.  I guess they think that maybe if they call it "swag" then it’s cooler, or more valuable, or more desirable or something.  Shirts, pins, hats, stuffed chickens with logos on them… it’s all "swag."

And, well, we’re starting to get some.

We’re starting small… just doing a little printing here and there.  We have official business cards with all of our web info.  That’s fun.  And today we just got a bunch of cute little 1" buttons.  That’s right!  And they can be yours!  But only if you come to shows!  So come on down to get some funny, and get some "swag."

If these work out, we should be working our way up to stuffed logo chickens in no time!

We’ve Got Stuff

You know, we’ve been around for a few years now.  And one thing you notice when you’ve been around a few years: you collect a lot of stuff!  We have costumes and props and small set pieces and lawn chairs and all sorts of knick-knacks and such.  So, as happens when you have a bunch of stuff, you have to find somewhere to put it… or you know you’re just going to end up misplacing it or your cat’s going to cough up a hairball on it or something.  So, today (with the generous support of Andy and his truck) we got a public storage unit.  Very exciting.  And you’d be surprised how much stuff you can fit into a tiny space like that.  We’re thinking we may host our Christmas party at our 5x10 outdoor entry storage unit.  We could hang tinsel.  Very festive.

And here’s a personal Jen PS - I don’t get the whole orange and purple thing.  I know that’s blasphemy, so near Clemson, but those colors just vibrate when I look at them… and not in a good way!  Oh well.  Still, go team Public Storage!

Improv Leaders

Last night, Anne and Jen got the chance to go help the Leadership Greenville boards have a little fun, celebrate their accomplishments, get to know each other better, and even explore a little about leadership.  And let me tell you, these people can party!  They were funny, they were thoughtful, they were brave, they were good sports… it was a great time.  We do think that the highlight of the evening was an "It’s a Small World" kick line.  (Don’t worry.  We won’t tell who was in it!)  We heard who would be played by Arnold Schwartzenegger or Katharine Hepburn or Jim Carrey in the movie of their lives.  We heard some fabulous rants about people who won’t engage, voice mail hell, and improper introductions.  Seriously… if these are the people who’ll be leading Greenville… this place is gonna be lots of fun.  Thanks to Judy and all of the guests from last night.  We had a ball!

Process

Sir Ian McKellan enlightens us as to his process. Very enjoyable!

Help The Lost Colony

You may or may not have heard of them, but The Lost Colony is an outdoor theatre company in the Outer Banks of North Carolina that has been around for 70 YEARS.  They are one of the landmarks of North Carolina theatre.  And nearly their ENTIRE costume stock… from the last 70 years… has recently been destroyed by fire.

So they are asking for help.  Below I’ve pasted the note sent out to SETC members giving details.  If you can help at all - sewing, a small monetary donation… anything… it would be a huge gift to a theatrical mainstay of the South.

Dear SETC Member:
The Lost Colony (Manteo, NC) costume shop was destroyed by fire last week along with thousands of costumes, props, artifacts, and two other buildings. Here’s how YOU can help!

What can you sew? A message and request from SETC’s Vice Chair Design/Tech Committee:
Dear SETC friends,
Many of you have heard of the recent fire at The Lost Colony. They lost their costume shop and almost all of their costumes. Seventy years of history was destroyed, including costumes by Irene Rains, Fred Voelpel, and William Ivey Long. If you are like me, you were stunned to hear about such an overwhelming loss. Any of us can imagine how devastating this would be to our own theatres.
I feel that as members of SETC, we are like a very large extended family. The Lost Colony and the people, who work there, have long been active and supportive members of our community. As part of this family, I thought there must be some way we could help our colleagues in their time of need.

WE CAN HELP! The folks at The Lost Colony are receiving offers of help and are creating a database to match needs with capabilities. For example, a small university program or theatre might be able to make some mob caps or aprons, but a larger institution or organization could make more complex items.
All offers of help are welcome.

If you, your school, organization or theatre are able to contribute to their costume needs, please let me know what you would be able to donate. I am collecting that information from SETC members to pass on to the Costume Shop at The Lost Colony.
You may contact me at jmatthew@sewanee.edu or call (931) 598-1126.
Yours,

How do I send a financial contribution?

More Pirate Stuff

Just to get you in the spirit for Wednesday’s International Talk Like a Pirate Day - check out the various and sundry YouTube clips by The Pirate Guys.  The featured one is actually a parody of the Britney video Jared posted yesterday.  One of my personal favorites is the clip about who would win in a fight between pirates and ninjas.  Awesome!  Anyway, enjoy… and prepare, me hearties, for September 19th!

Leave my terrible Britney dance impressions alone!!!

Hey bitches!

This is Jared, I thought I would give Jen a break at on the blog and because I feel it is my duty to the world to make sure everyone sees this youtube video.  I have recently become completely addicted to youtube, and hopefully you have seen this already, but if for some reason you have been hiding under a rock, I would like to prove that no, I am not the biggest Britney fan ever.

Enjoy:

Just a Remindarrrr

Next week - next Wednesday, in fact - it is the return of International Talk Like a Pirate Day!  That’s right!  The day when all ye scurvy dogs and lusty wenches can feel free to tell that jerk at the office to walk the plank - that cute girl at the water cooler that she shivers your timber - that land-lubber that a Bung Hole really isn’t what you think it is at all…

Co-founded by Jen’s uncle (John "Ol’ Chumbucket" Baur) and his wacky friend (Mark "Cap’n Slappy" Summers), this is one of the few holidays that is built for grog and merriment.  And, since it falls smack-dab in the middle of the week, I believe that celebrating International Talk Like a Pirate Week would not be considered out of line.

So get your rats bilged and your swashes buckled… ‘cuz September 19th is just around the cornarrrrr…
